IPV6 causing connection issues with Sony PSP PS5 consoles and other software

The easiest way for me to describe this issue is by going over a case I recently worked on. The user has a Sony PSP and he is trying to remote play to his Sony PS5 at home. The PSP is connected to the Office WiFi network and Gaming services are not being filtered. I double checked the settings in the Security Appliance (a router with security software) and it all looks good.

Fortunately, the Security Appliance Router had a advanced event log feature which allows me to see the details of all traffic. I retrieved the MAC address of the PSP and started analyzing the web traffic. As expected I can see that the PSP is making connections to various IP address under akamaitechnologies.com and amazonaws.com. This is confirmation that Sony's infrastructure is being partially hosted by these 2 vendors.

Upon further analysis I can see the router is getting IPV6 packets directed to the PSPs MAC address in the Office WiFi. The key thing is that the PSP is not responding back. IPV6 packets are only coming in, but none are going out. This is when I started checking if IPV6 is active in the network, and as you probably suspected, it isn't.

Some networks have IPV6 turned off, and in this case the PSP is not able to force the connection using IPV4. My suggestion was to disable IPV6 from the PS5 router. This will force the PS5 to make a connection using only IPV4.

Error messages could be:

  • Something went wrong (8801330f)

  • Error could not connect

Hopefully this helps someone out there having this same issue or something similar. For example some NVR may connect using IPV6 but if your device doesn't have IPV6 enabled you'll get an error. Diagnosing IPV6-related issues can be tricky, but disabling it on routers is usually straightforward.
